ABOUT
Matthew Carroll is a photographer concerned with the way people shape, and are shaped by, the places they inhabit. His work often looks at the edges of daily life, where gesture, light, and environment quietly intersect.
Raised between Latin America, the UK, and the United States, and having spent years working in Southeast China, Carroll's experience of place is marked by rootlessness. His photographs reflect an interest in how identity, memory, and routine unfold across shifting geographies.
He works in portraiture and landscape, using photography as a way to observe and reflect rather than declare. His images are made slowly, often revisiting places over time, guided by a desire to see what is lasting, ordinary, and unresolved.
He is currently working on long-term projects in the American Midwest and in Shenzhen, China.
