Matthew Carroll (b. 1982) is a photographer based in Indiana. He grew up living in Latin America and in the UK before his family moved to the United States when he was fourteen. He has also spent a significant amount of time in Western Europe, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. These formative life experiences are at the root of his keen interest in people and their constructed surroundings. His work focuses on the human experience, the characteristics of environments people create for themselves, and how these inform the meaning of their lives. Through portraiture and everyday happenstances, his work explores the lyrical narratives of everyday life, while examining the complex intersection of the places we call home and how these shape dreams, personal realities, and expectations. He is currently working on long-term projects in the Midwest and in Shenzhen, China.
